South Korean Dramas (Kpop) and the Sri Lankan Fangirls : An insight to the Chaos

I have refused to watch South Korean TV shows for a very long time. The sudden excitement over Korean stars was a bit too much to handle. I couldn't comprehend the fandom which emerged out of no where. One week you hear about a new TV series called 'Sujatha Diyani' (Jewel of the Palace), and the next week you can't set foot outside without seeing or hearing something about Changumi. And later on I heard of so many different 'diyanis', I lost track of the whole thing.

Few months later, when I mentioned about the American sitcom named Full House to some of my friends they misunderstood it for a Korean TV show under the same name. It was a bit disturbing at that time because I took extreme pride in going against the Korean mania. Also, the story-lines of those two shows were extremely different, I almost felt sorry for them.

So, like that I was able to keep my distance from the Korean TV frenzy and continued my atypical life thinking I'm so cool..... *BOOM*! That was until one day I was talked into watching Heartstrings (AKA "You've Fallen For Me") by a friend. I agreed because there was nothing else to watch and I was tired of repeatedly watching the old movies I had with me.

After watching the first episode I was amazed, because I hadn't started hating it already. Instead I found that it's music was really good (It's about getting ready for a musical and the lead actor is a singer in a K-Pop boy band IRL, so there's plenty of good melodies in that drama)

Enchanted by (mostly because of the traditional and western music mash-up ^) Heartstrings, I started to believe that the Korean dramas are not so bad after-all. So naturally, I started watching another one named "Playful Kiss". It was horrible, I couldn't believe that a girl could steep so low to win over a rude, ill-mannered, big headed jerk. Few episodes later, I started understanding the Korean TV show fandom in Sri Lanka. That craze is not about the storyline, not about the morals or values. I don't think people can tell the plot of two Korean stories apart without getting confused for that matter. But it's all about the following things;

HUMAN DOLLS
People in Korean movies-specially guys-are freakishly flaxen and well-groomed. I'm not being racist here. But I think this is a key point.

KISSES and SKINSHIP ARE NOT AWKWARD
Rather than Hollywood kiss scenes, K-drama kisses are more endurable for the Sri Lankan culture.

FANCY LIFESTYLE
The lead and the supporting characters basically look like the Asian versions of Ken and Barbie with their designer clothes, fancy accessories and high-end hair styles.Who doesn't want to watch that eh? It's like virtual window shopping ;)
And those houses and their rooms... and really really expensive vehicles...

DAMSEL-IN-DISTRESS
The female lead is depicted as a clumsy, weak, stupid girl who is always prone to accidents. And no matter how much of a jerk the boy is, he always comes to her rescue at the right time. (In both the dramas I saw, these situations are in-fact the only scenes where the boy acknowledges the girl's presence) I bet this is super romantic to most people. Actually even I was relieved watching those scenes, as I was feeling so bad about the poor girl constantly getting humiliated and ignored.

CUTE
Pastel colours, teddy bears, romantic landscapes, making hearts with their hands... need I say more?

NICE, WELL-MANNERED PEOPLE & NO VIOLENCE
Korean dramas always depict the characters as refined and well mannered people. This may not be the case in real life. However, even the villains in K-drama plots knows how to show some courtesy. So at the end of each episode, the viewers are not burdened with hatred depicted in the drama.

It's fantasy and unrealistic and a totally different genre; but if you hate that kind of stuff you always have the option of staying away from the k pop paradise. But I'm telling you K pop or K dramas are a nice resort if you want to take a break and escape from the reality for a few minutes :)

Best of Mean Girls Quotes (GIFs)

Mean Girls (2004) is one of those rare chick flicks which actually has a good storyline. Tina Fey basically calls out all the complex high school - girl drama in this brilliant teen comedy, in a very realistic manner.

And if it's good enough for Jennifer Lawrence to mention in her Oscar acceptance speech, it certainly is worthy of a post in my blog. So I put together some timeless quotes from Mean Girls in this article. You'll understand them better if you've actually seen the movie... ;)

1. Don't change your personality just to feel accepted by someone else.

It's not just epic! it's a Masterclass Twitter Win!

This is part of the conversation that went down b/w Mahela Jayawardena and two Indians...

Upto this, it was just a friendly banter and a good comeback from Maiya.  And then this stupid Indian pops out to degrade his country.

but @aviralashok keeps going on and on and on with his worthless 'less than 140 character' insults. So Maiya does what he does best, he shows his class by tweeting this...

LOL just LOL

Respect!

Things I've Learned at the University

So, I've spent nearly 9 months at a campus and it turns out every important thing I've learned here are mostly social-skills. :D I know that I'm not experienced enough to write a blog post on University Life or Life in general. But I'm just going to state the obvious ;)

Special Note : All of the following "lessons learned" are about the society and it's ways and in no way connected to any person living or dead (or any particular institution.) Basically I'm talking about "stuff" in general...

1. Copying is the most important survival skill. (and Einstein approves)

Ability to produce an original answer with the use of material stolen from other people and the internet is of vital importance if you are ever going to make it out alive from a university. Apart from that one has to figure out several things in-order to pass exams - which I will not mention here in the fear of losing my life, (yes, university people are tough! ;) ) and mostly because I haven't figured them out myself.

BlueStacks : Use your favourite Android apps on your PC or MAC

I'm thrilled to find out that I can play Clash of clans and Temple Run on my PC. Apparently this has been possible for quite some time now. But it's new to me, so here comes a blog post!

Coolest of programmers have created a thing called Android Emulator called BlueStacks that allows us to use or test android apps using our computers. This is awesome because the steps are so easy, even a newb can manage the installation process without any problem.

Step 1 : Go to BlueStacks website using this link :  http://www.bluestacks.com/app-player.html

Step 2 : Download the player. (If you own a PC click the green button and the mac users should use the silver one)

Step 3 : Click on the downloaded file and Install the player.

Step 4 : Open BlueStacks player and search for the app/game you would like to use.

It's that simple! :)

I'm sure most of you might know better or similar alternatives to BlueStack. (I've heard of www.andyroid.net  too.) Feel free to mention them in the comments box below.

Good bye for now, because I have a Programming quiz today evening! ;)

Why we are proud to be Sri Lankan

©sakshatoonsrilanka
It's been almost a year and a half since I last wrote a blog post. I thought today would be a good day to start over as it's the 66th Independence Day of my beloved mother Sri Lanka. First I started writing this in Sinhala, then I changed my mind and decided it's better if this could be read by the visitors from other countries too. (as they are the majority of my small audience ;) )

Sri Lanka is a country with a recorded history that spans over 3000 years. Over the years our small island has gone through a lot; and yet we've managed to come this far because of the sacrifices of our brave national heroes and the Sri Lankan Armed Forces. So on this Independence Day I thought it's better if we can remind ourselves the real reasons behind the pride of being a Sri Lankan.

1.  LEGACY : Today marks the 66th anniversary of the victory of hundred thousands of national heroes who rose against the British empire to free our motherland.

2. STRENGTH : The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is the home to a brave nation that defeated the LTTE terrorists: who were named as the Most Dangerous Terrorist Outfit in the World by FBI at that time.
Many heroes of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces sacrificed their lives to save this "land of the lions" and we are forever grateful towards them.

3. PEACE AND HARMONY : We are not ready to destroy the legacy and the identity of our nation under the pressure of extremists! But we respect equality more than anything. From the ancient times, our island has been the home of people belonging to various religions and races. We lived in harmony: and most importantly, we lived happily with each other. The blend of cultures increased the value of our country. We learned to respect the differences and the diversity of each ethnicity. Sri Lankan lifestyle has a different rhythm that allow the Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Muslims and people belonging to many other religions to co-exist. Many of the

4. HERITAGE : Our country is peppered with ruins of ancient glory, which are still capable of providing lessons for modern engineering. Among them, eight places have been declared as UNESCO World Heritage sites. (Namely, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the ancient city of Sigiriya, the Golden Temple of Dambulla, the old town of Galle and its fortifications, the sacred city of Anuradhapura, the sacred city of Kandy, Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka.)

5. ACHIEVEMENTS : Being Sri Lankan, I cannot end a list without a Cricket reference! ;)  Our national cricket team is one of the best teams in the whole world. Sri Lanka has blessed the world with many veteran cricket players and I must mention the victories and the fame they've bought home over the past few decades.
